Goop was born when a noted NY artist who was using my Crystallo medium asked me to create something similar, with a longer shelf-life that was looser and more “goopy”. In appearance, it looks like clear mayonnaise. Like Crystallo, it’s archival and contains no solvents or varnish, therefore no odor or toxicity. Goop can be used to lubricate the canvas and paint into directly, or added to the paint itself. You can glaze, retouch, and use it as a final rub to enhance and even out the dry paint. If you clean and soak your brushes in
cold-pressed safflower oil, you can eliminate solvent completely from the painting process
When using goop as a final protective finish, I would add about 15% balsam resin. This process would give it a harder more durable surface and a little more luster. Maybe 7 parts goop to 1 part balsam would be a starting formula. Some people paint with this mix, the reason I don't put it in when I sell it, is that it shortens the shelf life in storage, doesn't stay "open" as long and changes the fluid painting consistency.
